Amhara Genocide by Abiy Ahmed’s Military in Merawi, Gojjam, Ethiopia

Press Statement form Amhara Fano People’s Force

(February 16, 2024)

Following recurrent targeted killings of Amhara civilians in Ethiopia, the Apartheid regime led by Abiy Ahmed carried out horrific massacres of more than one hundred innocent civilians including a pregnant mother, children, and the elderly on January 20, 2024, in the city of Merawi, Gojjam, Ethiopia. This barbaric crime of war and genocidal act is confirmed by several international media organizations including Reuters. Members of Abiy’s army went house to house and killed innocent civilians with a level of cruelty unparalleled in Ethiopian history.

Slaughters of innocent Amhara civilians occur repeatedly in violation of international human rights laws, conventions, and practices, especially Articles 2 and 3 of the UN Human Rights Convention. By all account, atrocities of Amhara civilians under the watch of Premier Abiy Ahmed over the past 5 years constitute genocide.

Over the past seven months alone, the Apartheid and Fascistic regime led by Abiy Ahmed Ali has killed hundreds of innocent Amhara civilians in Ajire Janamora, Shoa Robit, Amhara Saynt Dunsa where 300 indigenous Amhara including entire families were slaughtered by Abiy’s army.

The Amhara Fano People’s Force expresses its heartfelt condolences to the families grieving for those murdered brutally. We shall do all within our means to hold those responsible for the atrocities accountable in a court of law.

Our primary goal going forward is to help bring down the barbaric, cruel and Apartheid system at the earliest opportunity. The Abiy Prosperity Party poses an existential threat not only to Amhara; but also, to other ethnic groups, including Afar, Anuak, Gamo, Gurage, Somali, Tigre, and members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC).

We are determined to strengthen our resistance against the oppressive state and government in partnership with other stakeholders who believe in justice, genuine equality among Ethiopians, the rule of law, democracy as well as sustainable and equitable development in Ethiopia. We vow our commitment to the Amhara population regardless of where Amharas live and work.

In this connection, we commend the government of the United States, the European Union, Human Rights organizations such as the Lemkin Institute for expressing outrage, for calling for an independent investigation of the massacres in Merawi as well as for demanding accountability of those who have committed war crimes and crimes of genocide.

We believe that Ethiopians and the international community must demand cessation of state and government sponsored atrocities of innocent civilians, especially Amhara and further urge that culprits, including Premier Abiy Ahmed, his Chief of Staff and other officials be held accountable for war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of genocide as soon as possible. The international community has the responsibility to act fast.
